In 2010, the campus of the University of Concepción was named one of the most important architectural works of Chile of the first half of the 20th century. The “Obra Bicentenario” award honors the works that have changed the face of Chilean cities over the past 100 years and have greatestly improved the quality of life of their inhabitants. The Los Ángeles campus was founded in 1962 at the request of the people of the province to the rector of the university, David Stitchkin Branover. It currently has 1,300 students and 35 full-time faculty, as well as other part-time academic staff. The university is located in the university district. The entire campus includes the so-called Ciudad Universitaria (University City), which is also home to museums, sculptures and parks. Today, the campus has an area of 1,425,000 m2, of which 239,856 m2 are built. It is the center of knowledge, science, culture, technology and research of the city of Concepción. The mural Presencia de América Latina by Jorge González Camarena is located in the Casa del Arte on the university campus.
The Chillán campus was founded in 1955 with the support of many institutions such as the United Nations, the OAS, American and European universities and others. It focuses mainly on agricultural sciences and has about 2,000 students, more than 100 academic staff and 250 administrative staff. [2] The head office is located in the city of Concepción and has two other locations in Chillán and Los Ángeles. In a 2012 citizen survey, it was chosen as the symbol that most identifies the Penquists. The University of Concepción is divided into three campuses, located in Chillán, Los Ángeles and Concepción. The latter is the largest and most important campus. His main godfather was the Chilean educator and lawyer Enrique Molina Garmendia, who was the 1. secular university in Chile. As part of its educational line, the University of Concepción devotes a large part of its budget to university research. It has the most complete Chilean art museum in the country, several sports centers and a network of 11 libraries, the main of which occupies an area of 10,000 m² with a total of 100,000 volumes. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many scholars of Concepción began advocating the construction of a university for southern Chile, where it would be possible to study professional degrees outside the capital Santiago. However, a project of this magnitude required a high level of organization that did not yet exist.
